Clarification and Thanksgiving deadline

By carolynkunin , 26 October, 2026

Dear All,

The question I posed was awkwardly worded. I should have asked: in what way does the name Aspern indicate Pushkin?

Hint: I believe this to be a cryptological clue planted by Turgenev.

I am adding a deadline of Thanksgiving to the contest. If no one wins by then, I will disclose the solution the Friday after Thanksgiving day. Good luck!!

Aspern is a neighbourhood in Vienna, Austria, within Donaustadt. The Battle of Aspern-Essling was fought on 21–22 May 1809 during the War of the Fifth Coalition. An Imperial French army led by Napoleon was defeated by a larger Austrian Empire army commanded by Archduke Charles, Duke of Teschen. Napoleon Bonaparte was so obsessed with winning that he would cheat at cards, but felt morally obligated to return any money he won as a result of said cheating. Ivan Turgenev's father, Sergey Nikolaevich Turgenev (1793-1834), was a colonel in the Russian cavalry and took part in the Patriotoc War of 1812 (he fought in the Battle of Borodino). Pushkin's Pikovaya dama (written in Boldino in the fall of 1833) appeared in 1834 (the year of the death of Turgenev's father). The main character in Pushkin's story, Hermann bears a resemblance to Napoleon. Turgenev's father served as the model for the sixteen-year-old narrator's father (Pyotr Vasilievich, Zinochka's lover) in Turgenev's story Pervaya lyubov' ("First Love," 1860). In his poem January 29, 1837, Tyutchev says that, like first love, Russia's heart will not forget Pushkin. After the poet's death, tsar Nicholas I asked Zhukovski to read Pushkin's papers and to destroy everything that might compromise Pushkin. Btw., pushka means in Russian "cannon." I'm wrong again, no doubt.
