It wasn't that bad. It explained the phone calls, and gave a new twist to the son's madness. But yes, the practice has been common since Genesis, and possibly before.Borges' Pierre Menard provides a worthy comment.

Barrie Karp: There's a "takeoff" (or
reflection on) in today's (May 28, 2012) The New Yorker by Lorrie Moore
in the fiction section on VN's famous story "Signs and Symbols." I only read the
first sentence of the Lorrie Moore story so far (and looked at the
picture/illustration) and realized it.

strange exercise. Like Barrie, I didn't read more than the first or a
third sentence. Is this a regular literary
practice?
