Hi, John and List,
If I hadn't mislaid my copy of C.Morgenstern's Galgen Lieder - as I also
seem to have lost a CD where one can hear them be sung in a very modern
musical "translation" & I forget by whom - I'd be able to photograph my
"uni-lingual" rendering of the noctivagous singing fish.
I wouldn't even dare to reproduce them by heart because I'd certainly drop a
smiling line or two, or scan the entire page incorrectly.
NB: I've been trying to avoid emoticons and parenthesis signs not to spoil
the poem

Unfortunately I don't have the complete "Nabokovian" but I checked the index
offered in Number 41 (1998) and found under Rea, John A.:
"Elphinstone, III, 29"
Now I can understand the EDNOTE [ "As to whether or not the person John
mentions was merely
speculating, we'll have to take his word for it. SES].
Could you "present your chidings" to the List?
Being no Pierre Ménard myself, I shall try to "googgle" the Abendstern poem
cum translation, if possible, so that the List may check if the latter is
fair...
1. Christian Morgenstern. Fisches Nachtgesang: das tiefste deutsche Gedicht.
Parodie auf Goethes Gedicht "Ein Gleiches" ("Wanderers Nachtlied").
2. I also found its rendering on line ( I wonder why I remembered it
differently) at http://www.onlinekunst.de/fische/01_fische_storjohann.html

The CD I was looking for ( buried among Schumman's and Schubert's Lieder) is
Friedrich Gulda's "Sieben Galgenlieder" nach texten von Christian
Morgenstern: Blanche Aubry - Georg Kreisler - Ein Instrumentalensemble unter
Leitung des Komponisten (1967, Wien) .
Digital remastering 1989 by Preiserrecords (stereo 90025)
I thought there might have a jazzy musical rendering of the fishsong but the
record, although it offers Der Zwölf-Elf poem, carried it not...
