SKB observed to JF: "interesting that Dante's astronomical knowledge
was
rather post-medieval - classifying our Sun as a 'star' is quite modern!
And
I can't resist the crude physicists joke:
'There's no gravity - the Earth SUCKS!' "
John Shade's "astronomical knowledge" would be pre-medieval ( obviously
not, but I couldn't resist (again) to intrude a quotation from "Canto
Two"):
"The little scissors I am holding are
A dazzling synthesis of sun and star."

In relation to Peter Dale's answer on elephants ( apparently I hit the
"ivory" stone ), one more question. Would the English English word "pub"
be
derived, as also the name for the "Poplar trees", from "populus" ( the
people)?
I had never realized until now that the designation "Democrat" is
inspired
in the Greek and "Republicans" ( Res Publica) in the Latin ( and,
perhaps,
Roman Law)?
