Rare indeed is the photograph, or group of images, that can cause a man to
feel a pressure welling up within his breast, until he notices a warm
trickle meandering toward his chin. Such reactions are not usually going to
be brought about by the fact that he is viewing historically significant
color shots, nor by consideration of the convergence of forces that made
Stalins and Hitlers possible in a variety of cultures in that era, nor by
speculation on Vladimir and Vera's difficulties in Europe during the war
buildup. I think it's going to be more the complete joy, the unmitigated
hope, and the sheer vibrancy with which, for example, the young woman in
slide 41 was...bursting, that gets to him. At least for V & V, the sad
realities of the second round of mass slaughter had not yet come into being.
