Rare indeed is the photograph, or group of images, that can cause a man to feel a pressure welling up within his breast, until he notices a warm trickle meandering toward his chin. Such reactions are not usually going to be brought about by the fact that he is viewing historically significant color shots, nor by consideration of the convergence of forces that made Stalins and Hitlers possible in a variety of cultures in that era, nor by speculation on Vladimir and Vera's difficulties in Europe during the war buildup.  I think it's going to be more the complete joy, the unmitigated hope, and the sheer vibrancy with which, for example, the young woman in slide 41 was...bursting, that gets to him. At least for V & V, the sad realities of the second round of mass slaughter had not yet come into being.

Robert Boyle has received permission for the images to be freely distributed on the list.  Because the file is so large, I will post a link here which will remain active for a few weeks; you can click this link to download or view the powerpoint file with all of the images.  Mr. Boyle notes that color photographs of Hitler and the Nazi regime are extremely rare.  ~SB
