One of my grandkids, who is interested in the martial arts, showed me an address online in which a young man discovered his own brand of joy in Nabokov. He was unfamiliar with the entire novel... but was absolutely fascinated with HH's description of Lolita's tennis-playing. He thought that Nabokov's "subtle narrative" was related to "budo" and he decided to substitute certain words (tennis=kendo; tennis-racket=shinai, aso) in the flow of the narrative.
He admits that the same substitution of words cannot be applied to karate.

I didn't copy the entire page that he reproduced and I'm adding the original text in English with the same cuts I applied to his text.
I have no idea if this guys enthusiasm corresponds to anything significant. However, it amused me to imagine that "Lolita" may touch different chords in those that read it, even if only in part.

Fabiyo: Lolita lutando kendo ( Dec.2006)

* "...But all that was nothing, absolutely nothing, to the indescribable itch of rapture that her tennis game produced in me - the teasing delirious feeling of teetering on the very brink of unearthly order and splendor... with her apricot-colored limbs, in her sub-teen tennis togs! Winged gentlemen! No hereafter is acceptable if it does not produce her as she was then, in that Colorado resort between Snow and Elphinstone, with everything right: the white wide little-boy shorts...the white breast-kerchief whose ribbons went up and encircled her neck to end behind in a dangling knot ."
