Вальс. Я вообще крайне нетерпеливый человек, как правильно заметил ваш секретарь.
Waltz admits that he is an extremely impatient person, as the colonel remarked. (The Waltz Invention, Act One)
But, unless he was eavesdropping at the door (as the colonel does after the Minister of War asked him to leave the room), Waltz could not hear what the colonel said of him:
Министр. Ну, вы всегда найдете отговорку. Что ж, придётся и сию чашу
выпить... Весьма вероятно, что он уже дожидается в приёмной.
Полковник. Да, это народ нетерпеливый... Вестник, бегущий без передышки
множество вёрст, чтобы поведать пустяк, сон, горячечную мечту... (The colonel compares Waltz to a messanger who runs many miles without a respite in order to relate a trifle, a trance, a delirious dream. Ibid.)
In Act Three, Waltz, as he prepares to receive the Minister of War, repeats the latter's words in Act One:
Полковник (по телефону). Слушаюсь... Слушаюсь. (К Вальсу.) Господин
военный министр к вам, по важному делу, -- насчёт покушения. Следует
принять, конечно.
Вальс. А я надеялся, что Сон... Что ж -- придётся и сию чашу выпить. ("And I hoped, it was Trance... Well, I will have to drink this cup too.")
There is a similar mysterious repetition of words in Blok's play The Incognita (Vision Three):
Молодой человек. Костя, друг, да она у дверей дожида...
Запинается на полуслове. Все становится необычайно странным. Как будто все внезапно вспомнили, что где-то произносились те же слова и в том же порядке.
As has been pointed out before, the eleven generals in VN's play resemble the mystics in Blok's play Balaganchik (Little Booth).
