You know, I have to check, but it seems to me that Stauntons "signs" their sets by stamping a crown on the Knight!

In a former posting I mentioned Kinbote’s conspiratorial signature as a Black Knight by a fortunate mistake that brought “N” to my attention . Here are his words:  “I wish to beg her, without raising my voice, and very humbly, as humbly as the lowliest of the King’s subjects might plead for an immediate restitution of his rights (the plan is mine and is clearly signed with a black chess-king crown after "Kinbote") - note to line 71
