Happy New Year! I forward the following show business gossip, just in
case it hasn't made the American papers. According to two or three different
gossip columns in British newspapers, Harold Pinter has resigned from the task
of writing the screenplay for the new film version of *Lolita* now being
considered. One story said that David Mamet had agreed to take over the job but
I can't confirm this. According to the *Daily Mail* story the producers are
still working on casting the various roles. It said that they would like
Tracey Ullmann to play Lolita's mother! Even stranger, the Mail story said
that the producers wanted a bankable star for the role of Humbert and were
considering actors like Ralph Fiennes and Hugh Grant! No disrespect to a fine
and enjoyable actor, but I have to say that casting Grant would give us a
radically different Humbert for the nineties!
