VN Bibliography: LOLITA & DR. ZHIVAGO

The late fifties were remarkable for the suddence emergence on the New
York Times Best Seller List of three books written by Russians --
two of them by Russians writing in English. Ayn Rand, born in St.
Petersburg six years after VN, graduated from Petrograd University before
coming to the U.S. in 1926. Her 1957 mega-hit_Atlas Shrugged_ preceded
the 1958 "Lolita" on the NYT Best Seller List. _Lolita_
was in turn displaced by Boris Pasternak's _Doctor Zhivago_.

All this is brought to mind by a Bauman Rare Books advertisement in the
the latest NYTBR. The 1955 first edition of LO (Olympia Press; Paris) is a
cool $2600; ZHIVAGO (the 1958 Russian edition published in Italy) -- a
paltry $2200). For those interested, the phone is (1-800) 992-2862.
