From Mary Bellino (iambe@javanet.com):

If I recall it correctly, Martin Amis's essay on Lolita (in the Atlantic
Monthly of September 1992) may have dealt with some of these issues,
though of course I don't think Amis read McNeely's article. I can't find
the Amis essay in my Timonian cave, but perhaps someone remembers it or
has a copy to hand (it wasn't reprinted in Visiting Mrs.Nabokov).

I haven't read McNeely's article, but if he is really asking whether one
"can regard as high art the story of a pedophile," he seems to have a
rather peculiar view of art. Or maybe not so peculiar these days.

Amis's essay antedates the founding of NABOKV-L and was never discussed
here (or at least my searches turned up only passing mentions); maybe we
should rustle up some copies have a go at it. As I recall it was very
good.
