Here's the way I look at it: VN was involved in shooting war between
psychology and art. It's over now, and psychology won. Psychology is now
the public language for communicating and sorting out one's day-to-day
challenges and confusions.

In VN's time there was still some hope that art could create that
language with commonly understood metaphor and narrative. VN also had to
contend with symbolist literary types who like Freud offered an
intellectual satisfaction more or less purged of aesthetics --
From our historical distance it's hard to feel the soldier's fire in the
belly. But don't we all admire the instinct to fight for that
spine-tingle?
