I find a possible reference to VN's "Lolita" in the last paragraph of a recent
(Jan. 19) message from Charles Dickens received on the list "BOZ: The Life and
Times of Charles Dickens". This list is handled in the US by St.Johns College.
It provides answers in Dickensian style to questions addressed to Charles
Dickens, via a Dickens society in England. Most of the questions are from
students and teachers.
I do not understand the implications or point of this paragraph. It seems to
have nothing to do with the bulk of the letter, which discussed Lucie Manette
and the Victorian ideal woman, apparently in answer to a question which I
missed. I quote the letter:
"...
"I'm sorry, but I have to go now. A new novel is on my mind. Would you
like to browse a list of possible titles? I prefer "Lolita" among them,
but I don't know. It has worked well as yet. . . .
Cheers,
Charles Dickens"
(The last sentence sounds to me to be incomplete and/or mistyped.)
Can anyone here enlighten me? I have sent a question about this to the Boz list
but have not received an answer yet.
