I don't know if I was the one who "uncovered" the "gem" (re: "bodkin"
meaning one wedged in between two others), but I did quote that
definition in my 1982 article on PF that I recently mentioned here
(in _Nabokov's Fifth Arc_). In that essay, I did quite a bit of
etymological (as opposed to entomological :-) ) analysis of
the characters' names in PF and discussion of relevant multiple meanings
