Another disparaging remark vis-a-vis book clubs is in "Russian Writers,
Censors, and Readers" (*Lectures on Russian Literature*).
Nabokov notes that the good reader, "does not belong to any specific
nation or class. No director of conscience and no book club can manage his
soul" (11).
Also - I seem to recall HH commenting about Charlotte Haze and her book
club...
