EDITORIAL NOTE. Can any one help Grigorii Utgof with his query on Barthe's
"death of the author" idea and VN's LATH. I have some hazy recollection
that Michael Wood has some comment about Barthe in his recent VN book and
that Maurice Couturier also may discuss it. Whether or not they (or
others) address the matter in connection with LATH, I don't recall.

From: Grigori Utgof <utgof@tpu.ee>

I am studing Russian literature at Tallinn University of Educational
Sciences. Though I am only on the second course now, I have succeded to
write some papers on VN's poetics ( "Nekotoryie zamechania ob
ispol'zovanii imeni avtora v proizvedeniiah Vladimira Nabokoba", "Some
remarks on _Ada_ onomastics", "Motiv "puti" v romane Vladimira Nabokova
"Podvig" ) .

This April I am taking part from two international student conferences -
at my home university and at Tartu. I am going to deliver two papers:
recently mentioned "Motiv "puti" and "Rolan Bart v romane Vladimira
Nabokova _Look at the Harlequins!_" . The last one is still in progress:
I am trying to find some materials for a survey in _LATH!_ scholarship.

Could I ask you a favor? I haven't found any papers or monographies on
_LATH!_ in Estonian libraries ( even _The Garland Companion to Vladimir
Nabokov_ is not available! ) , and I don't have enough time to order the
necessary materials from Sweden or Finland. I will be very obliged if you
tell me, has the problem of Roland Barthes "La mort de l'auteur" echoes in
the last part of _LATH!_ ever been discessed in Nabokov's criticism? What
do you think about the possibility to state that Nabokov parodied some
modern trends of literary criticism or at least was interested in them?

I am looking forward to hearing from you!

Cordially,

Grigori Utgof
