I know this is a Nabokov mail group and not an "American Beauty" group, but
as part of the debate on the source of the movie this item from the IMDB
might prove of interest.

Was American Beauty Really "The Long Island Lolita?"
Writer Alan Ball has acknowledged that he
got the idea for American Beauty (1999) from reports about the Joey
Buttafuoco-Amy Fisher scandal. In an interview with New York Post
columnist Neal Travis, Ball said, "I was as fascinated, repulsed and
entertained by the Amy scandal as anyone else. ... But underneath it all
were human lives that had gone horribly astray. What had become fodder
for jokes on late-night talk shows was, to those who had lived it, a
genuine tragedy."
