I think Susan is right--that is the passage I was thinking about. But
Professor Johnson's finding in Transparent Things expresses, really, the
same idea. Nabokov is remarkably consistent, for good or for ill, in his
ideas.

Thanks a million--you have no idea how many hours of frustation and how many
paper cuts you and Professor Johnson have saved me.
