To rephrase my previous tentative identification, I am almost certain the allusion is to Norman Douglas who lived for many years in southern Italy, and latterly on the island of Capri-the setting of his most famous book, "South Wind" (1917).

The "English book" is not identified as a novel, so perhaps refers to Axel
Munthe's famous autobiographical "Story of San Michele."
