Poet James Lasdun's first novel, The Horned Man (Cape), had its roots in Nabokov's Pale Fire, but expanded the theme of the unreliable narrator to a near-lunatic degree, weaving a tortured but highly satisfying story of academia, psychotherapy and violence.
