EDNOTE. A FEW DAYS AGO Jansy Berndt de Souza Mello took e-mail exception to what she thought an unduly personal reference to Carolyn Kunin in a posting from Dmitri Nabokov. The latter responded with a poem. Jansy responds in a verse of her own. I propose an amnesty on the occasion of VN's birthday.

DMITRI NABOKOV POEM FOR JANSY

There is an Enforcer named Jansy
who can't comprehend fun or fancy.
She won't fail to protest
the most innocent jest
if its theme makes her feel antsy-pantsy.

There was no abuse of friend CK's e-mail handle, since she herself has unflinchingly mentioned both chicken and chair online.

JANSY REPLIES: Here is my answer to Dmitri´s animadverses

Handy Pandy, Jack-a-dandy
antsy-pantsy in sugar candy
when we pluck a pen off fancy
to strike S from cosmic pie
it still splatters in our platters
it still risks giving offency
when we´re dealing aye to I.
