Another first time, apropros of Marianne's:

My first time with _Lolita_ was also inspired by The Police. I was an eldery 8th
grader when the song, "Don't
Stand...," acquired special meaning because I had a terrible crush on my History
teacher at the time (not a salad
of racial genes, but exotically Scottish). The headmaster of the all-girls
school I attended (uniforms and all)
happened upon me in a hallway devouring the novel. Without batting an eyelid, he
suggested that if I were
enjoying _Lolita_, I should read _Pale Fire_, which I did. And didn't understand
most of it, but loved it anyway.
(For the record, Sting was actually a teacher (though not, if I recall
correctly, at an all-girls school). I think he
taught English.)
