Assorted remarks on Hazel's suicide, her unattractiveness,

Some questions to ponder:

Why are the Shades so sure about the reasons why their
daughter committed suicide?
Once again we have Shade’s word for it. And it is at
least a small comfort for them to think they know the
reason.
Since the discussion has taken a "realistic" approach:

In real life, how many parents know the reasons why
their child committed suicide? To many it remains a
mystery, unless s/he left a note.
How many parents know what’s on their child’s mind?

Dear Jansy,

This certainly could be a reflection of Frost, who at some point was exposed as not a very nice guy.

Dear Jerry,

Pancho Barnes was such a character. There is a wonderful biography of this woman who was an early aviatrix and by all accounts a much better flier than Amelia, but she was neither graceful nor physically attractive and certainly not fit for public adulation (very foul mouthed).

She went through several fortunes, but even in poverty never lacked for masculine companionship. She befriended the early astronauts whom she entertained at her "Happy Bottom Riding Club," which is the name of the fabulous biography that came out about her a few years ago. She was an especially close friend of Chuck Yaeger's and he wrote very touchingly of her in his own autobiography.
