Translations might be verisimilar and very false at the same time

their original source. If we depart from the Latin "Veritas", me might
reach
"Truth" but also "Wirklichkeit". To top it all, the antonyms and
oppositions
might differ! I read that in Greek the opposite of "true" is not
"false",
but "semblance" (appearance).
Sometimes, inspite of having seen a word, I visualize it in retrospect
in an
incorrect way. Thus it happened that I altered Shade's words and,
instead of
a "bimanist" ( line 911) I saw him as "ambidextrous".
When I re-read his verses I noticed that for the "bimanist" we might
have
the "humanist" ( "hum", "um", "one","un", "uno", "eins"). And what about
"one-armed" ( one gun? one arm?), beside all the reflected movements of
hand
and digits?
While discoursing lightly on "cavesdropping" I forgot to add that soon
after
the word "stillicide" appears ( in the silent and frozen immobility of
"stil-ettos" and peace-killing images), Shade mentioned "...reproduce
the
leaves/... trophies of the eaves". Somewhere else, groping for an
inspiration, he also wrote "moondrop" before chosing "Pale Fire".
All this to say that perhaps Kinbote thought Shade altered the names of
the
people he included in his poem, or he actually didn't see Dr. Sutton or
visualized him as a real New Wye citizen named Sutcliffe or...
