QUERY: VN's opinion of John Shade?

To the List,

I have a question: is John Shade the decent person he seems to
portray in his poem about himself? Did his creator ever express any
personal thoughts or feelings regarding Mr Shade?

I am wondering if VN ever made any ex-textual references to the
character of John Shade. I believe he did express a certain personal
fondness for two of his characters, Pnin & Lolita, both of whom he
does seem to have seen as decent and moral beings. We also have his
claim of distate for Van and Ada. Did he ever express an opinion on
John Shade?
