In response to Sadie Brown, I'd like to point out that Shade
absolutely does remember identifying himself with the waxwing:
"I was the smudge of ashen fluff". I probably should have
written "the waxwing and its shadow", though.

And if the beginning is not clearly Shade remembering his
childhood, I think lines 131-139 are.

I enjoyed your comments on illusion--the sky and the waxwing
not really being there--but of course there's a real sky
and, in the book, a real afterlife.
