Nabokov's sandwiches . . .

Hello all,

there is something obscurely ludicrous about this "flask of milk and a few
sandwiches". I don't know if it should be read as parodic, but VN does seem to
be attentive to the self-romanticizing of picnickers; it was explicit in Pale
Fire: the farmers' "fairy-tale meal of bread and cheese" (fn. to line 149). Any
more examples of such precious lunches?

may you all evade the lightning this Spring,
Abraham Adams
