Describing the rogues’ gallery at the Wace Post Office, Humbert Humbert (the narrator and main character in VN’s novel Lolita, 1955) suggests a cinematic trick:
With Lo’s knowledge and assent, the two post offices given to the Beardsley postmaster as forwarding addresses were P. O. Wace and P. O. Elphinstone. Next morning we visited the former and had to wait in a short but slow queue. Serene Lo studied the rogues’ gallery. Handsome Bryan Bryanski, alias Anthony Bryan, alias Tony Brown, eyes hazel, complexion fair, was wanted for kidnapping. A sad-eyed old gentleman’s faux-pas was mail fraud, and, as if that were not enough, he was cursed with deformed arches. Sullen Sullivan came with a caution: Is believed armed, and should be considered extremely dangerous. If you want to make a movie out of my book, have one of these faces gently melt into my own, while I look. And moreover there was a smudgy snapshot of a Missing Girl, age fourteen, wearing brown shoes when last seen, rhymes. Please notify Sheriff Buller. (2.19)
In the Russian Lolita (1967) Sheriff Buller becomes sherif Fisher:

The first novel in Aldanov's trilogy Klyuch ("The Key," 1929), Begstvo ("The Escape," 1932) and Peshchera ("The Cave," 1936), Klyuch begins with the murder (or death due to overdose) of Fisher, a wealthy banker who loves little girls. In his review of the second volume of Peshchera in Sovremennye zapiski (Contemporary Notes, No. 61) VN mentions the characters of Alanov's trilogy: the Clareville couple, Fedosiev (the former head of the secret police) and Don Pedro, the criminal reporter who becomes the movie man in emigration and whom Braun, just before his suicide, meets at the railway station (Don Pedro is going to America):

Vivian Clareville (Musya's husband) brings to mind Vivian Darkbloom (anagram of Vladimir Nabokov), Clare Quilty's coauthor who has written a biography, My Cue, to be published shortly. P. O. Wace, P. O. Elphinstone and mail fraud (a sad-eyed old gentleman’s faux-pas) make one think of vsyo "pis'mo iz Rossii" (all of "letter from Russia") in Aldanov's novel that VN praises so highly at the end of his review:

Btw., Tony Brown (as Bryan Bryanski, alias Anthony Bryan, is also known) clearly hints Braun (the main character in Aldanov's trilogy). Deformed arches with which a sad-eyed old gentleman is cursed make one think of Byron (who was born with a deformed right foot). Aldanov is the author of Mogila voina ("A Soldier's Grave," 1939), a short novel about Byron. Its characters include Chateaubriand (cf. Bryan Bryanski, alias Anthony Bryan). Dr Byron is the Haze family physician at Ramsdale. In The Enchanted Hunters (a hotel in Briceland) Humbert drugs Lolita to sleep with Papa's Purple Pills given to him by Dr Byron.
