Like Troshcheykin, Tipe (the main character in L. Andreev's story "Рогоносцы", The Cuckolds, 1915) is a cuckold. But, unlike Nabokov's portrait painter, Tipe is rich and for the annual festival of cuckolds on his Mediterranean island he puts on golden antlers: Когда-то Типе, человек мрачный и важный, грозил ей в шутку, что в случае измены не только наденет рога, но даже позолотит их, к чему, по его мнению, его обязывало положение богача на островке и возраст.
Btw., Troshcheykin has an Italian friend who lives in Capri. Leonid Andreev was a friend of Gorky (a namesake of Aleksei Maksimovich Troshcheykin), the writer who lived in Capri before the World War I. Peshkov (Gorky's real name that comes from peshka, "pawn") reminds one of Troshcheykin's words in Act One:
Трощейкин. А вот почему вы, Антонина Павловна, пригласили нашего маститого? Всё ломаю себе голову над этим вопросом. На что он вам? И потом, нельзя так: один ферзь, а все остальные - пешки. (Troshcheykin asks Antonina Pavlovna why did she invite the famous writer? "One of your guests is a queen and all other are pawns.")
Note that the famous writer is an antidulcinist, and A. M. Peshkov's penname means in Russian "bitter."
