Here is a quote from N. P. Karabchevsky's What my Eyes have Seen (Volume Two, Chapter 4) mentioning VN's father ("a starched anglomane") and his historical words ("dry shot") in the First Duma (1906):

Накрахмаленный англоман В. Д. Набоков, с его холостым выстрелом: "власть исполнительная, да подчинится власти законодательной", снискавшая ему лавры героического либерализма, возбуждал в нём* всегда ироническое замечание: "попал пальцем в небо"!

In 1917, after the February Revolution, the czar's abdication and the arrest of his family, Karabchevsky wanted to defend Nicholas II, but the trial never took place.
