Dear Dieter,
I was about to send out your "thank you note" when it occurred to
me that your discussion of the Italian text and reference tothe Jerome
stuff might be instructive (& entertaining) for a lot of neophytes on the
list who know very little about the intricacies (pleasures) or
scholarship. Might I have your OK to run your note in the edited form below?

I'LL SUPPLY A BIT OF CONTEXT HERE.
I checked what the 1992 Italian translation has which presumably
came about with help from Dmitri. "Ss-alve," dice "ss-arei curioso di
ss-aperne di piu." (As there is no "h"-sound in Italian, there obviously
cannot be an elision of aitches.) Guesswork. In my old (1960) translation
I had "'oern Sie mal, was soll das 'eissen?" (Now listen, what does that
mean?) Guesswork, too, I would say. But as I am sure I did not understand
the phrase in 1960 either, I may have asked VN, as I know I asked him
about Dot chetu = Domremy. If I asked him, my old version will somehow
reflect VN's answer. Unfortunately my 1960 correspondence has not
survived. So the answer might be in the Berg Collection.
To everyone who has kindly offered his ideas on "'ow about Hart?", I would like
to express my sincere gratitude.
