EDITOR'S NOTE: I am providing some information bearing on M. Boisson's
question here since it may be of interest to a wider audience. If you
have additional suugestions, please send them to NABOKV-L or M. Boisson.
The most important work on Nabokov's auto-translation is
certainly Jane Grayson's _Nabokov Translated: A Comparison of
Nabokov's Russian and English Prose_. Oxford UP, 1977.
Another important work is Elizabeth Klost Beaujour's _Alien
Tongues: Bilingual Russian Writers of the "First" Emigration_
Ithaca: Cornell UP, 1989. See also Beaujour's article "Translation
and Self_Translation" in _The Garland Companion to Valdimir
Nabokov_, ed. by Vladimir Alexandrov. NY: Garland, 1995.
W.W. ROWE, Carl Proffer, and Robert Hughes have written on the
translation of particular novels.

Subject: Q: Nabokov as translator of himself

------------------------------------

A student is working on writers who acted as translators of their own work, such as Beckett or Nabokov.

Has any work been done on Nabokov's English translations of his Russian novels?

I am lookng for investigations of translation problems, of Nabokov's linguistic and stylistic decisions as a translator, and not for a purely literary approach.

I shall be very grateful for any bibliographical information on this.
