My thanks to Julian Connolly for the following item.... DBJ

An item found in the "Food" section of *The
Washington Post*, Wednesday, May 18, 1994 (page E1): an article
entitled "A Lust for Lentils: One Man's Confession" by Alex Loud,
begins:

Lentil. Len-til. Len. Til. Lennnnn-tilllllllll.
Lentilita. Lovely, luscious lentil.
Okay, so maybe it made more sense when Nabokov did it.
Perhaps a man's love for his lentils isn't the stuff of great
novels. Indeed, I'd be the first to admit that my relationship
with these little legumes is rather lacking in that sordid,
tempestuous edge so necessary for good melodrama and bad
television. Nonetheless, it is an enduring affection I
possess, one bounded only by the unavoidable fact that the
principal objects of that affection happen to be small brownish
seeds whose conversational abilities are, at best, limited.

[The rest of the article is about lentils, not
literature.]
