Subject: breakfast with Melville

In Strong Opinions, Interview 5, "TV-13 NY" p. 60,
Nabokov answers a question about the scenes he would like to have
filmed. All of the scenes make sense to me except the one
about Melville feeding a sardine to his cat at breakfast. I have
some guesses but have been unable to specifically place either
the sardine or the cat. Any ideas?
