EDITOR's NOTE. After mulling over the various suggestions and keeping in
mind the original query concerning a general interest book group, my
revised suggestions would be: the Updike and Alter reviews, Parker, Boyd's
ADA chapter in his biography, and then Boyd's book on ADA.

I'll second Prof. Johnson's suggestion, and I'll add
Boyd's "Nabokov's _Ada_: The Place of Consciousness" if not the whole book
(which is very readable), then its introductory chapter. In addition to
explicating some subtle structures of "Ada", Boyd also shows the function
of the more "shocking" sexual and scatological elements in these subtle
structures.

EDITOR'S NOTE. Although others may have responses, I would suggest the
chapter on ADA in the second volume of Bryan Boyd's VN biography. John
Updike's review is republished in one of collections.

My book club is currently reading ADA. Any suggestions on criticism to
read prior to our discussion? Most of the members are not interested in
the more in-depth readings that literary scholars may give to a
text--they need a few basic concepts to understand Nabokov's intentions.
Help-- and enlightenment -- would be greatly appreciated.
