There is a humorous allusion to Don Aminado in the Russian version
of *The Gift*. When in the last chapter Fyodor begins to fall asleep to the
whisper of the rain and all sorts of verbal rejects break into his
semi-conscious mind, he rhymes an awful "ispolin iasnopoliansky" (Yasnaia
Poliana's giant, that is Leo Tolstoy---[Yasnaya Polyana was the name of
Tolstoy's country estate]) with Don Aminado's real name Shpolyansky.
