It has been recently brought to my attention by one of my students that
Egon Hostovsky (a Czech writer who, like Nabokov, fled Europe for the
United States in 1939) remembers in LITERARY ADVENTURES OF A CZECH WRITER
ABROAD that in the late 1950s his publisher had a bright idea of how to
sell him to the American public: "We are going to coin a slogan that you
are a combination of Pasternak and Nabokov... a blend of Dr. Zhivago and
Lolita."
