S-Petersburg papers, such as "Nevskoe Vremia," for
example, report from the Nabokov Centennial which
currently takes place in S-Petersburg. This paper
mentioned SF Bay Area resident Terry Myers who donated
the first editions of "Mashen'ka," "Podvig," and
others to the Nabokov Museum on Bolshaya Morskaya 47.
Even President Boris Eltzin acknowledged achievements
of Nabokov in connection to Nabokov Centennial and
stated that Nabokov, along with other
(deceased)Russian writers could be called "a symbol of
solidarity of the Russian nation."
Apparently Don Barton Johnson is currently in Russia,
and, upon his return, he'll tell us about his
impressions. However, is there somebody in Russia now
who can share with us his/her personal impressions of
the Nabokov Centennial? I heard that because of the
NATO bombings, there is an "anti-american hysteria" in
Russia, and I wonder how it could affect the
celebration.
