I want to propose that the Adrian Lyne's film version would have been
better if the actress who played Anabelle Lee was cast as Lolita, and Swain
as Anabelle Lee. Humbert's love for Lolita was quite romantic to Swain's
already fully developed unfeeling character, portraying Lolita as
perverting Humbert rather than the other way around. Better for Lolita, I
feel, to have started more romantically using the other actress (Sorry, I
don't have her name) and Humbert change her. Her being romantic in her
nature as an actress, but playing a vulgar heroine in a movie could have
created a very good combination. Conversely, with Dominique Swain, by her
nature being slightly vulgar and playing Anabelle Lee could have (in the
sense of it being a movie) created the opposite but same duality of nature
with romanticism dominant. The actress who played Anabelle Lee was slightly
too romantic (it's understandable because it's Humbert's recollection which
created this romantic aura, but the book . We should have seen something
more than Humbert saw about Anabelle Lee because it's a movie, not a book.
The book only gives Humberts's description and selected memories of her,
but the movie could have revealed more to the viewers than his view.
Humbert in those days when he was a teen, this sense of vulgarity between
him and A.L. should have been shown, because he was the person then as he
was in his 40's when he met Lolita.
