This is just a minor footnote to our book club discussion. Below is a
sentence from today's AP story on Andrew Morton's book on Monica Lewinsky.
What struck me is that "the latest volume recommended by Oprah Winfrey's
book club" is not even identified, as if its *sole* value is in the fact
that it came thusly recommended. While authors of these books enjoy
substantial profits they would have not enjoyed otherwise, this is quite a
steep price to pay in terms of a writer's -- usually already quite fragile
-- ego.

``Monica's Story,'' topped Amazon.com's ``Hot 100'' list of best-selling books
on Thursday, outselling the latest volume recommended by Oprah Winfrey's book
club and novelist John Grisham's new work.
