EDITOR's NOTE. I thank Maxim Shrayer, author of the new volume _The World
of Nabokov's SHort Stories_ for bringing back from Moscow the following
items.
-----------------------------
1. Mikhail Shul'man. NABOKOV, PISATEL': MANIFEST. Moscow: Izd-vo A i B,
1998. pp. 224.

I have only glanced at this but it appears to be an extended personal
response to Nabokov's writing. If anyone out there has read it, NABOKV-L
would be glad for details.

---------------

2. Sergei Il'in, Nabokov's chief English-Russian translator, kindly sends
me volume IV of the series "Sobranie sochinenii amerikanskogo perioda"
(N's Collected Works of the American Period). Sankt Peterburg: Simposium,
1999. pp. 702.

This particular volume includes PNIN, PALE FIRE, all nine of Nabokov
English stories, and several interviews. Apart from PALE FIRE which was
co-translated by Aleksandra Glebovskaia and the 1964 _Playboy_ interview,
translated by Maria Malikova, the texts were translated by Il'in.
The volume is supplemented by nearly 80 pages of notes and
commentary by the translator and Aleksandr Liuksemburg who, togeter with
G.F. Raximkulova, is the author of _Magistr igry Vivian Van Bok: Igra slov
v proze VNa v svete kalambura_ Rostov-na-Donu, 1996 -- a book well worth
loooking at.
