The passage you posted is so delicious, with so many appealing
aftertastes...the image is particularly striking to me, having grown up
in New Mexico where diamondback rattlers are a hiking hazard ... for
instance, to use employ the serpent's image in its most innocent sense:
a creature blindly seeking warmth and comfort as a child would...Is
autobiographer is tracing his own thought processes back to a sort of
reptile brain, with overtones of wariness about infusing innocent
cravings with the retrospective knowledge of worldliness?
