From a review, by Gail Caldwell of The Boston Globe, of Tim O'Brien's
novel _Tomcat in Love_: (The protagonist) "is a comic-obsessive, in
other words, and Tim O'Brien's answer to Humbert Humbert, mad and
talented and loathsome and sometimes demonically engaging. As the
increasingly unreliable narrator of _Tomcat in Love_, Chippering has the
challenging task of remaining compelling throughout the story of his own
foibles and noisome acts." The review does not make it clear if the
reviewer sees influence, or just similarity.
