Sorry for that "of course," since "of course" it's not self-evident if you
haven't read Sterne's A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy (1768),
where it occurs in ch. 2, "The Passport: Hotel de Paris." I said "of course"
because if I'm not misremembering this was noted 30 years ago in Appel's
Annotated Lolita, which Lolitaphiles should not be without (and also more
recently in my Library of America edition).

Nabokov also singles this phrase out in his discussion of Sterne in Lectures
on Literature.
