EDITOR'S NOTE. Because this is important information for every Nabokovian
who works with VN's Russian-language texts, NABOKV-L will be
rerunning the information every now and then. Well-nigh complete,
this annotated set should, in my opinion, become the standard in the field.
Information on obtaining the set direct from the publisher is to be found
below.
----------------------------------

The Russian Publishing House "Symposium," Editor-in-Chief
Alexander Kononov, is putting out an excellent edition of Nabokov's
Russian writings. "Authorized" by the Nabokov Estate, the first of the
five volumes is now available. The second is expected in September. The
series is compiled and supervised by the well-known Nabokov specialists
Natalia Artemenko-Tolstaya and Alexander Dolinin. Dolinin provides the
introductory essays for each volume and oversees the extensive
bibliographic and excellent content annotations which are being done by
various Russian scholars. In addition to their own investigations, they
have the advantage of the annotations in the extant German and English
editions. Maria Malikova has supplied the apparatus for the first volume
and Olga Skonechanya is now working on the second.
The volumes are organized on a mixed chronological-genre
basis and contain many items not in other collected editions. In general
this gives a more accurate impression of VN's chronological
development. The 850-page first volume _Vladimir Nabokov (V. Sirin)
1918-1925"_ includes (in addition to the "expected" content) the recently
discovered story, "Pasxal'nyj dozhd'" [Easter Rain], the vignette "Slovo"
[The Word], and VN's early translations into Russian, as well as the
scarce "Rupert Brooke" essay, and several uncollected poems, essays, &
reviews.

The first volume opens with Dolinin's essay "Istinnaya zhizn'
pisatelya Sirina" and falls into the subdivisions below. (A full Table of
Contents will soon be available.)

I. Stories (divided into uncollected and those pre-1926 stories in
_Vozvrashchenie Chorba_)

II. Prose Translations: 1) Romain Rolland's _Colas Breugnon_ [Nikolka
Persik]; 2) Lewis Carroll' _Anya v strane chudes_ [Alice in Wonderland].

III. Poetry ----all of the poetry published in VN's collections plus
uncollected items and VN's poetry translations of Seamus O'Sullivan,
Ronsard, and Baudelaire.

IV. Plays (all, with the sole exception of "Tragediya gospodina Morna")

V. Essays & Reviews

Plus 60 pages of Malikova's Notes.
-------------------------------------------------
This five-volume set of the Russian works (and the recent
three-volume Library of America English novels set) provide the best,
reasonably complete editions of VN that are likely to be available for
many years. All of us who work closely with the texts and write or read
books and articles about VN's work have had the increasingly frustrating
irritation of encountering citations to VN editions that are not on our
shelves. Adoption of these two sets (or even just the Russian one) would
do much to standardize reference in the scholarship. One could also assume
that information available in the Annotations to these editions would be
common knowledge and not require additional sourcing. The new Russian
edition, published by Symposium in Sankt-Peterburg, is modestly priced and
available direct from the publisher via credit card. It is expected to be
available for some years.
