A few years ago I published an essay on Nabokov's use of third-person,
past-tense narration, placed in the future, to describe something that
happens to him (or to his protagonists) in the future. See my "Playing
Nabokov: Performances by Himself and Others" in _Studies in Twentieth
Century Literature_ 22.2 (1998): 295-318.
