EDNOTE. A couple of weeks ago I spilled coffee on my computer with disastrous
results. I have been able to do NABOKV-L stuff only in a very limited way and
incoming mail has accordingly fallen. The chief victim is the group discussion
of Transparent Things so ably led by Akiko Nakata. I would like to restart this
exchange with chapter 16. So please send in your thoughts. I anticipate a return
to full service by mid-week.

One idle thought on TT-16. I am rather puzzled by HP's avalanche nightmares and,
in particular, by the concluding sentence "Dream-man is an idiot but not wholly
devoid of animal cunning; the fatal flaw in his mind corresponds to the sputter
produced by tongue twisters: 'the risks scoundrels take'."

This seems to echo the preceding (& punning) "movement of verbal colluvia in
the valleys of Toss and Thurn." "Colluvia' (plural of 'colluvium' id defined as
"a heterogeneous mass of rock detritus or soil material emplaced primarily by
gravitational processes on or at the foot of slopes."
