Dear Don,

Your presentation of the story, I am afraid, is not quite
accurate. Here are a couple of facts to illustrate the point.

1. I sent you my original letter on Tuesday, September 6, and you intended
to run it, along with Mr. Dolinin's response, on Thursday, September 8.
Only after Dmitri Nabokov intervened with his first letter ("DN's Take"),
you accelerated the process and printed the Shapiro-Dolinin exchange on
Wednesday night.

DEAR GAVRIEL. I HAVE NOT RECHECKED BUT MY RECOLLECTION IS THAT AD RESPONDED MORE
QUICKLY THAN EXPECTED AND THAT I RAN BOTH YOUR AND AD'S POSTINGS ON THE EIGHTH.
I THINK I SAW DN'S FIRST LETTER ONLY VERY SHORTLY AFTER THAT.

2. You assert that you did not run DN's aforementioned letter since, as you
put it, "the matter seemed to me to be taken care of. Both GS's and AD's
views had been presented." But what about Dmitri Nabokov's view? To the
best of my knowledge, DN repeatedly asked you to run his first letter, and
after you did not publish it, he sent you (September 9) the second Yletter
("The Coward's Way") which you ignored. Only now, more than a week after
receiving these letters, you finally published them.

ALL QUITE TRUE.

I simply wished to set the record straight.

Best,

Gavriel
