You raise many interesting questions. I just wanted to call you attention (should not already know) to the following volume--certainly the best single investigation of VN's novel:

A Guide to Nabokov's Pnin
by Gennadi Barabtarlo

Title: Phantom of Fact: A Guide to Nabokov's Pnin
Author: Gennadi Barabtarlo.
Publisher: Ardis
Barabtarlo is also translator into Russian of the original English and doubtless mulled over many of the same problems you did.
